This beautiful little Baroque side table in oak is a typical example for a furniture piece from the Aachen Luettich region between Germany and Belgium. Its rectangular top sits on four curved legs and carved rocaille and flower decorations embellish the legs and the apron of the table.
Historical Background
The heyday of the Aachen- Luettich furniture style was during the 18th century Baroque and Rococo period.
Aachen was a free imperial city at that time and clerically it belonged to the Bishopric of Luettich (Liege). French art mainly inspired the art of the early 18th century in this area.Baroque Chest of drawers walnut, Germany 1750
The special feature of the furniture from this area is the exclusive use of carved wood.
Most of the time the cabinetmakers from the Aachen- Luettich region used oak for their furniture pieces.
While in other parts of Europe the Regence and Louis XV furniture stands out for its veneer, marquetry and bronze decoration, the Aachen Luettich furniture demonstrates a more modest approach. The favored wood was stained and waxed oak. The hand carved flowers and other Rococo motifs served as the preferred decorations.
The Aachen Luettich region is well know for their glass cabinets and armoires but also for tables and Baroque side tables.
