Bauhaus Armchair by Gelenka, Beech and Plywood, Elastic Seat, Germany circa 1930s
A beautiful and rare Bauhaus armchair by Gelenka Tyskland.
The armchair features bent beech plywood and a webbed back. The chair has been restored and lacquered with shellac (french polished). It has large, curved armrests.
Very good seat comfort due to the fact that the seat and backrest have elastic straps running through small wooden joints. This was a very progressive method for the Bauhaus era.
Designed by the German designer Erich Dieckmann and /or Ernst Breitenborn for Gelenka Tyskland. Erich Diekmann, was a student at Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar from 1921-25 and affiliated to many Bauhaus designers, he designed many furniture classics of the Bauhaus and Mid-Century period.
