Set of six Biedermeier Chairs, Vienna around 1820
The Biedermeier chairs have a fan-shaped, sculpted backrest. Additionally, a curved frame gently supports the backrest on each side. This is one of the most spectacular set of Biedermeier chairs.
The filigree construction of these attractive chairs shows definitely an influence from the Danhauser workshop. Especially, the fan-shaped backrest is a typical characteristic of Danhauser’s style.
This extraordinary set of six Viennese Biedermeier chairs can add personality to your home with their simple and elegant grace.
The Austrian Josef Ulrich Danhauser was one of the most famous furniture makers during the Biedermeier period. After his training as a sculptor, he founded “Das Etablissement fuer alle Gegenstaende des Ameublements” (The institution for all things connected to interior decoration) in Vienna.
In 1808 he already had 100 employees. His company produced furniture, lamps and other decoration pieces. Today his furniture design catalogs are in the Museum fuer Angewandte Kunst in Vienna.
The re-upholstered seats are detachable and the four legs are conical, slightly curved. Furthermore, the original seagrass upholstery is covered with a modern pink fabric. Metal parts from a former restoration reinforce the bottom side for better stability.
The Viennese Biedermeier chairs come refinished and polished with shellac and they show minimal signs of age-related wear with minor scratches.
They measures W: 17.32 inches (44 cm); H: 36.22 inches (92 cm); D: 17.32 inches (44 cm). Seat Height: 21.65 inches (55 cm).
