French Transition Chest of Drawers, France 1770
This French Transition chest of drawers dates back to 1760-70. The three drawer commode has a beautiful marquetry in kingwood, mahogany and other exotic woods with exquisite bronze fittings. It stands on four slender legs and has its original grey-white marble top.

The Transition Style
Unlike the earlier Rococo and Louis XV styles, the Transition style is more conservative, though no less opulent. For example, mahogany was a favorite veneer as well as a construction material.
The pieces have less floral marquetry but have no shortage of gilded surfaces. Furniture typically emphasizes solid veneers of wood bordered by linear gilt bronze mounts inspired by classical antiquity.
Vertical fluting and grooving accentuated consecutive lines, which mirrored the desire for more architectural designs in furniture.The Transition style represents the transition from Louis XV Rococo design to Louis XVI Neoclassical design.
