Georg Jensen (1866-1935)
Georg Jensen was born in Raadvad, a town north of Copenhagen on August 31, 1866. After an apprenticeship as a goldsmith at the age of fourteen and his graduation from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Jensen worked as a journeyman sculptor for many years. However, after finding little commercial success as a sculptor, he founded his own silversmithy in Copenhagen in 1904.
Drawing from the natural beauty of his childhood home, Jensen’s style was characterized, among other things, by the high quality of its craftsmanship and its use of ornaments in the shape of flora and fauna. Soon, Jensen’s smithy became one of the most significant silversmithies in the world. It also left a lasting impact on Scandinavian silverwork. This Jensen cigar box is a great example of his style.
