About The Designer
Maison Raak, a renowned lighting manufacturer, was founded in 1954 by Carel O. Lockhorn in the Netherlands. Initially working with Philips in Eindhoven, Lockhorn established Raak’s first store in Amsterdam, where the company became known for its sophisticated, futuristic designs in glass and metal. Raak’s minimalist approach to lighting evolved over the years, and in the 1960s, the brand gained further prominence through collaborations with prominent designers and artists.
One of Raak’s key partnerships was with glassmaker Willem van Oyen, who created lighting fixtures with abstract motifs resembling stained-glass windows. This collaboration was pivotal in shaping Raak’s signature style, combining artistry with functional lighting. The brand also worked with leading designers and architects like Evert Jelle Jelles, Sergio Asti, Bertrand Balas, and Nanny Still, further expanding its international appeal.
Raak’s most iconic designs include the cylindrical Fuga Lamp and the Globe 2000 range, which became hugely successful for their modern aesthetic and Space Age influence. Lockhorn, a visionary, was instrumental in developing the Space Age style in the 1960s and 1970s, positioning Raak at the forefront of cutting-edge design. Although he sold the company in 1974, he continued as director until 1977.
Raak’s legacy continues to influence modern lighting design, and in 1999, the company joined the Centre for Light Architecture in Drachten, further cementing its status as a pioneering force in the world of lighting.
