Late Biedermeier Casket Box, Southern Germany, Circa 1840
This exquisite late Biedermeier casket box from southern Germany, circa 1840, combines elegance and craftsmanship in a compact form. The box features mahogany and likely walnut burl veneer over oak and maple, with intricate inlays in maple and ebony. Decorative details include a surrounding meander band, a finely inlaid octagonal star at the center of the lid, and quarter stars in the corners.
Inside, the oak-lined interior includes two small removable drawers and a mirror on the lid framed in gold-plated trim. The box retains its original functional lock with side barbs. Restored with a polished shellac finish, the lid shows slight warping, causing the latch to not fully lock.
