18th century French Louis XV style commode, Paris 1740-1750. The body stands on four carved feet with gilt bronze fittings. Gilt bronze fittings also decorate the five drawers on the bombe front. Adding to the prestigious overall appearance is the stunning rosewood veneer pattern and the beautiful marble top.
It was the era of Louis XIV when commodes emerged as fashionable items. These new furniture pieces used two to four drawers, effectively replacing chests.
As commodes grew in popularity, so did the marble tops that topped them. The marble copied the shape of the furniture’s body, whether it was straight or curved.
These fashionable new items included drawers of different sizes. Some had two larger ones on the bottom of the piece while others had one or two smaller ones at the top.
In our case the Louis XV style commode is divided by a total of 4 drawers, two larger ones on the lower part and two smaller ones on the top. It has its original marble top and the superb originanze fittingsl bro, composed of acanthus leaves, flowers and rocailles.
This is a wonderful example of the exquisite craftsmanship of the 18th century Louis XV Style cabinetmakers.
The chest of drawers is in very good condition.
