French Louis XV Secretaire, “Secretaire en pent”, 1770
French Louis XV Secretaire, also called “Secretaire en pent”, 1770.
The design of the Secrétaire en pent, or sloping desk first appeared in about 1735. It was a small cabinet with a sloping front which opened out into a writing surface. It was also called en dos d’âne, or “style of donkey’s back”.
For the French Louis XV secretaire offered here, The cabinetmaker used walnut veneer, and he additionally decorated the piece with an exquisite figural marquetry on the outside of the writing top. For this part he used plum, satinwood and kingwood. The superb color and grain of the different woods are main features of this piece. Furthermore, leather covers the writing surface (replaced).
The inside of the writing top has six drawers and a central compartment. The secretaire has its original brass fittings and is in very good condition. It comes refinished and French polished and ships from Germany and includes shipping costs to Boston.
It measures 41.34 x 45.28 x 20.48 inches.
