18th century Chest of Drawers, German Baroque

This 18th century chest of drawers dates back to around 1760 and comes from the region of the city of Dresden. Different walnut veneer grains  decorate this elegant Baroque chest of drawers. Furthermore, the commode has its original very decorative bronze fittings and escutcheons. The top repeats the slight curve of the three drawers.

German Baroque Style

The German Baroque period was not one homogenous style, however. In Hesse, for example, the cabinetmakers were inspired by late Renaissance Italy in their use of gemstone for furniture decoration, and in the Rhineland, furniture production was influenced by the Netherlands, in the heavy use of oak.

In Southern Germany, the French Boulle-technique, which involved making marquetry out of ivory, different metals, tortoise shell, and mother of pearl, was an important influence and was heavily used.

Bavaria was an especially important center in the Baroque period, due in great part to the patronage of its Prince-Elector Maximilian II Emanuel, who sought out young talented artists and sent them to Paris for their education.

Further north, in Saxony, Dresden also became an important cultural center, attracting artists of all sorts, and gaining the nickname “Elbflorenz”, or Florence on the Elbe.
