Historical Background
The Louis XVI style emerged in France around 1780. It saw the final phase of the Baroque style as well as the birth of French Neoclassicism. The style was a reaction against the elaborate ornament of the preceding Baroque period.
More modern and geometric decoration embellished the traditional furniture in the early parts of this phase.
The later phase of this style gave priority to elaborate veneer wood grains. The marquetry decoration became less important and served mainly as a frame for the beauty of the naturally grown wood veneer grains.
