Antique Secretary Desk with Bookcase, South German 1780.
This elegant and unique antique secretary desk with bookcase has a beautiful cherry veneer and Neoclassical style geometric inlays in king wood and maple. The lower part has three spacious drawers and the upper part has two glass doors and two shelves. The interior of the writing compartment has seven small drawers and one open compartment.
This is a wonderful original piece which was made in Germany during the Louis XVI period. Additionally, it is a great example of the south German “Zopfstil”. The so called “Zopfstil,” a German word for the Neoclassical style that started around 1770, is a contemporary of the Louis XVI style. Zopfstil means “pig-tail style,” which alluded to the ancien régime. More modern and geometric decoration embellished the traditional furniture in the early parts of this phase. By the end of the 18th century, the norm was a simple, streamlined design.
