Bronze Figure: Lion Fighting a Snake – After A. Barye, Paris 20th Century
This solid bronze figure depicts the dramatic scene of a lion fighting a snake, one of the most celebrated motifs by Antoine-Louis Barye (1795–1875), a leading 19th-century French sculptor renowned for his animalier sculptures. Likely cast in Paris during the second half of the 20th century, this heavy bronze recast honors Barye’s original masterpiece, “Lion au Serpent”, created circa 1832.
The figure features a dark brown patina and stands on a round black marble plinth. The plinth is engraved “A. BARYE”, and the foundry mark reads “J.B. Deposee, Bronze Garanti Paris.” This exceptional piece is ideal for collectors of fine animalier bronzes, neoclassical sculpture enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a dynamic decorative object with historical significance.
