This secretaire a abattant or drop front secretary desk is an absolute masterpiece. It dates back to around 1840 and was made in France.
We can determine its place of origin because of a gold embossed coat of arms on the green leather of the writing top’s working surface. It shows the city arms of Strasbourg and a view of Strasbourg cathedral.
The walnut veneer on the outside of the secretaire is gorgeous and the pattern of the wood grain is beautiful.
Additionally, the cabinet maker embellished his masterpiece with small details like the flower intarsia in the corners on both sides of the writing flap or the curved feet with a volute intarsia. Furthermore, the interior which is decorated with maple root veneer has six small drawers and an open compartment.
The Louis Philippe Style
Louis Philippe ruled France between 1830 and 1848. This style became fashionable during his reign, eventually getting its name from the monarch.
Louis Philippe furniture is an eclectic mix of elements from various styles, notably French neoclassicism and neo-Gothic.
For the first time, the developing upper class–not the monarchy–influenced the progression of this style’s characteristics.
