French Secretary Desk, Directoire Style 19th century
This French secretary desk dates back to the end of the 19th century. Mahogany veneer and satinwood inlays embellish the outside of this pretty little Directoire style desk with cylinder top. The fold out writing top has its original green leather which covers the surprisingly large working space. Additionally, three small drawers and an open compartment can be used to store papers or pens. The contrast of the lighter yew wood of the inside and the darker mahogany veneer of the outside give this piece a special unique touch.
Historiscm
The French secretary desk is a typical piece of the historicism style of the second half of the 19th century. During this period artisans draw inspiration from earlier 18th and 19th century styles and created pieces of high quality. We can see an influence of the Louis XVI and Directoire style in the design of this elegant little desk.
