Solomia Side Board, Hand Made
About Ruda
RUDA is a multidisciplinary Ukrainian design studio, founded by Oleksandra Rudenko and Yuriy Vovnyanko in Odesa. Their primary artistic focus is the creation of unique furniture and interior design objects blending folk traditions with contemporary aesthetics. RUDA prides itself on effectively incorporating emotional complexity into its physical works, creating visual stories that enliven and enrich any interior. Traditional Ukrainian marquetry techniques are integral to this effort, both revitalizing a process of cultural pride and creating exceptional handcrafted art.
“Our projects are about returning to the origins. We strive to restore the value of handicrafts and individual products. In our subjects we update the topics of conservation of the Earth’s natural resources and human interaction with nature,” says the studio’s founder, Aleksandra Rudenko.
Marquetry is an ancient technique of wood inlays used to create visual stories and details on the surfaces of furniture and objects. Essentially a creation of “wood mosaics,” detailed marquetry took Western Europe by storm in the 17th century. But the origins of this practice lie in Eastern Europe, specifically in modern-day Ukraine. RUDA is dedicated to revitalizing the original practice and thereby inspiring a new generation to invest in artisan works.
Straw is a traditional Ukrainian material that has essentially inspired RUDA’s designs. Find the texture of straw (and the real thing) incorporated into the marquetry of these groundbreaking pieces.
Solomia Collection
The Solomia Collection is inspired by the fertility of Ukrainian soil.
The origin of the object begins in Western Ukraine, where 80-year-old grandfather Orestes collects straw for our products. He carefully sorts the straws by length and diameter. In our workshop, the straw goes through a staining stage, after which it is inlaid with the object itself. We are using a lasting varnish covering for the marquetry inlay to make the object practical for everyday usage. The hardware is handmade from the brass in our workshop.
Combining functionality with aesthetics, we propose to consider straw as a unique material for exclusive objects. The Solomia side board can become an emphasis of the minimalistic interior or centerpiece of the eclectic one. Thanks to the modification of the size, the cabinet is changing its function. Low and long it can serve as the TV bollard in the living room. Higher and shorter it can be perfect storage for the favorite tableware in the kitchen.
