Swedish Antique Chest of Drawers, Karl Johan Period 1830.

Historical Background
The Empire Style, which in Sweden developed to the so called Karl Johan style was introduced to Scandinavia by General Bernadotte, later to become King Karl Johan.
Furthermore, the Karl Johan style, named after the king, transformed the pompous French Empire style in a more modest and lighter furniture style. The preferred woods were mahogany or local beach and elm wood. The design connects it also with the central European Biedermeier style.
Clear lines and beautiful veneer grain were the main features of this popular style. Even as the Empire design disappeared from other parts of Europe, the Karl Johan furniture stayed in high demand in Scandinavia and other parts of northern Europe.
