A beautifully proportioned square games box from the Bauhaus period, crafted in Germany around 1920. The design reflects the movement’s characteristic emphasis on geometric clarity and functional elegance, combining refined materials with thoughtful versatility.
The exterior features ebonized wood side edges framing a reversible top with two classic game boards. One side presents a chessboard executed in contrasting maple and mahogany, while the reverse displays a Nine Men’s Morris board in maple with delicate plum wood inlays.
Opening the box reveals a vintage backgammon board lined in green, red, and white felt, creating a striking contrast to the restrained exterior. Brass hinges and a brass latch complete the design.
The box has been professionally restored and hand-polished with shellac, preserving its historic character while enhancing the richness of the wood surfaces.
A rare and highly decorative object that embodies the Bauhaus ideal of combining utility, craftsmanship, and timeless design.
