Historical Background
The Biedermeier style of antique furniture evolved in the beginning of the 19th century and marked a change in society.
After the Napoleonic Wars Central Europe had to overcome an economical and social crisis. The blossoming middle class in Germany and Austria was the critical factor in the development of this new interior design style. Additionally, the new focus on family and private life determined the production of different and more humble furniture pieces.
The French Empire style certainly still had a big impact on this new design movement, but the pompous part of the aristocratic style gave way for a more modest version.
The pieces were smaller and the cabinetmakers in the southern parts of Germany and in Austria mainly used domestic woods. As in all pieces of the style, with Biedermeier wardrobes walnut, cherry or maple veneers were the preferred materials. They were generally hand polished. You can still find ebonized columns or brass fittings on Biedermeier furniture but in a different and more unpretentious and modern way.
