Antique Louis XVI Dresser, France 1780.
This exquisite antique Louis XVI dresser stands out for its beautiful veneer design and the geometric kingwood and tulipwood marquetry.
Brass fittings and escutcheons decorate the three drawer commode. Additionally, brass fillets separate the drawers from each other. The canned round legs are made of walnut.
The marble top is original and its outline corresponds with the outline of the dresser.
Historical Background
The discoveries at the archeological sites at Herculaneum and Pompeii in the 18th century had a big impact on European artists and designers of the Louis XVI period.
Madame de Pompadour, mistress of Louis XV, had sent a group of scholars to Italy to report on the findings. The engravings of Greek and Roman art inspired many furniture designers. Particularly the ebenistes, who were responsible for the design of the marquetry, studied these prints.
The so called Neoclassical phase emerged in Europe which resulted in a more geometrical design. The decorations moved away from the curved and playful Rococo, and influenced the Louis XVI designers to create a more severe and linear use of form.

The antique Louis XV dresser is in very good condition. It comes refinished. The dresser measures H: 34.26 inches (87 cm), W: 39.38 inches (100cm), L: 19.3 inches (49cm).
