Historical Background

During the 17th century, the Baroque style had a marked effect upon furniture design throughout western Europe.

After the Thirty Years’ War the German territory of the Holy Roman Empire was divided in multiple small principalities. Each court had a slightly different taste and as a result the German Baroque furniture styles vary from region to region.

Around 1770-80 the so called “Zopfstil” emerged, which was the German version of the French Louis XVI style.
Zopfstil means “pig-tail style,” which alluded to the ancien régime.

In the early parts of this phase the traditional furniture started to change. This transition between two styles is always characterized by maintaining older, well known forms and adding newly developed design elements of an evolving style to them.

And this is exactly what happened in the case of this armoire.
