18th Century Antique Etching by Alessandro Mochetti
A beautiful 18th century etching by Alessandro Mochetti (1760 – 1812).
Although there is little biographical information on Mochetti, he is known as a prominent Italian engraver who was a pupil of Giovanni Volpato and worked with publishers in Rome. Mochetti participated in the creation of the illustrative tables of the work, with several hands, The Bible of Raphael, published in 1789 by Pietro Paolo Montagnani and which had subsequent editions and contributed with his engravings to illustrate the work Il Duomo of Orvieto. For the series of prints Episodes from the life of Pius VI, Mochetti engraved the panel Departure from Rome of S.S. Pius VI for Siena escorted by French Dragoons followed on the night of 20 February, 1798. Mochetti has engraved images taken from canvases by many artists, including Francesco Manno. His son Giuseppe was an engraver and worked at the Roman Chalcography (now the National Institute for Graphics).
This print features a walnut briar frame. The artwork is in perfect condition.
