French Grey Marble Mortar, 18th Century
A substantial eighteenth-century French mortar carved from richly figured grey marble. Larger in scale than many surviving examples, it combines robust functionality with the enduring beauty of natural stone, reflecting the importance of such objects in both domestic and professional settings during the Enlightenment.
The mortar is carved with a compact cylindrical body and a deep, generously proportioned interior designed for the grinding of herbs, spices, pigments, and medicinal preparations. Four sturdy cylindrical ear handles project from the rim, providing both practical grip and strong architectural character.
