This elegant antique drop front desk is a beautiful example for the desk style of the so called Restoration style in France. It especially stands out for its exquisite mirrored walnut veneer.
After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 the brothers of the executed king Louis XVI came to power. At the beginning of the Bourbon Restoration period, during the reign of Louis XVIII, a softer version of the French Empire style came into vogue.
In the decorative arts the French cabinetmakers continued to employ the strong geometrical patterns of the Empire period. Additionally they also added some whimsy parts in their designs. They carved musical instruments into the legs of small tables and desks for example.
Woods were lighter in both color and density. Instead of mahogany, the cabinetmakers used walnut and other local woods.
Elegant yet unpretentious harmony characterizes this antique drop front desk. Pretentious gilt bronze decorations are abandoned in favor of small lion head brass fittings. The inside emphasizes the functionality of this writing desk.
It is structured by four compartments for papers and a total of ten small drawers. The leather on the writing surface is replaced.
Apart from this, everything is original on this piece. It is in refinished condition and the French polish finish highlights the walnut veneer’s beautiful grain.
The desk measures: 56.7 x 38.19 x 18.9 inches. It is shipping from Germany, shipping costs to Boston are included in the price.
