Biedermeier Half-Cabinet, Cherry Veneer, Full Columns, Southern Germany, circa 1820
This exquisite early Biedermeier/Empire-style half-cabinet, dating to around 1820, hails from Southern Germany. The piece is veneered in cherry wood on softwood, with solid cherry wood components, showcasing the elegant simplicity characteristic of the Biedermeier period. The cabinet features full, ebonized columns, topped with original gilt Corinthian capitals and bases, adding a touch of grandeur to the design.
The antique cabinet features a single drawer at the top, equipped with recessed handles on the underside, and two lockable doors below, which operate with a tongue and groove mechanism, and an old box lock. The exterior of the doors showcases two ebonized diamond shapes. The interior features a counter-veneer in cherry, and contains one inlay board made of softwood. The piece has been carefully restored and finished with a traditional hand-polished shellac. This brings out the warmth and beauty of the cherry veneer.
