This antique chest of drawers of the 19th century is made during the Empire period, also referred to as Scandinavian Biedermeier. It captivates with its fine mahogany veneer. The antique chest offers three slightly convex drawers and comes with working locks and keys. It is refinished with French-polish finish.
Historical Background
The Empire Style emerged in the early 19th century in France. It was named after the French Emperor Napoleon. The style was a revival of Greek, Roman and Egyptian motifs which had begun in the Neo Classical period. Marquetry and carving were discarded and plain surfaces were decorated with brass and ormolu mounts of antique emblems. Additionally marble tops decorated commodes and console tables and mahogany was the principal wood used.
Marquetry inlays were not as common as during the neoclassical period.
The Danish antique furniture of the 19th century shows traditionally a bigger preference for simplicity. Mahogany veneer on pine was the preferred wood combination in Danish Empire. But the simpler design renounces the use of prestigious brass or bronze fittings and marble tops. Please also read our blog Antique & Modern Danish Furniture to learn more about this topic.
