Discover this stunning early Biedermeier Secretaire from Austria, dating back to around 1820. This desk showcases timeless elegance and craftsmanship. It features a walnut veneer on hardwood, with select details veneered in mahoganyand partly ebonized for a refined contrast. additionally, the front supports two intricately carved paw feet with aged patinated gilding, while the back rests on solid walnut egg-shaped feet.
This desk includes three large lower drawers and one top drawer, all crafted from walnut and mahogany with inset locks. The design highlights two ebonized full columns adorned with brass or bronze capitals and bases, adding sophistication. The thick drop-front flap features a secure double-locking brass lock, and the writing surface has a new cover of genuine black leather.
Inside, you will find nine small drawers with maple fronts and brass rings. Two open compartments sit alongside a wide, black-stained compartment underneath. The Secretaire also includes a cleverly hidden secret compartment for discreet storage. The restoration process involved hand-polishing with shellac, allowing this Biedermeier desk to retain its historical charm while offering modern functionality. Complete with two original, intricately crafted iron keys, this piece serves as a rare find for collectors of fine antique furniture.
