Biedermeier Sewing Table

This unique and original Biedermeier sewing table dates back to circa 1820 and originates in Austria.

The table has one drawer, with different compartments. Furthermore, the base of the table is beautifully designed with two cross-over legs on each side. The special feature, apart from the unique design, is the exquisite walnut root veneer. It embellishes this beautiful piece on top, sides and base.

The quality and design of the Biedermeier sewing table shows an influence of the famous Austrian furniture maker Josef Ulrich Danhauser (1780-1829). This unique table is a great example of the high quality of early Biedermeier craftsmanship.

Historical Background

The Biedermeier period is definitely connected to the increasing influence of the newly appearing middle class in Germany and Austria, which gained in influence after the Napoleonic Wars. The cabinet makers were not only serving aristocratic customers anymore. Their clientele also consisted of a wealthy bourgeoisie, who was interested to furnish their mansions or town houses with individual and well designed pieces.

The Austrian Josef Ulrich Danhauser was one of the most famous furniture makers during the Biedermeier period. After his training as a sculptor, he founded “Das Etablissement fuer alle Gegenstaende des Ameublements” (The institution for all things connected to interior decoration) in Vienna.

In 1808 he already had 100 employees. His company produced furniture, lamps and other decoration pieces. Today his furniture design catalogs are in the Museum fuer Angewandte Kunst in Vienna.
