Antique Cylinder Desk, Munich 1800-1810.

The cabinetmaker used bleached mahogany veneer for this antique cylinder desk. Three drawers divide the rectangular body of this desk. The inside of the writing top has a central compartment which is surrounded by four drawers. Leather covers the writing surface. (later)

Historical Background

The cylinder desk is also called “bureau Kaunitz”. It was introduced in France in the first half of the 18th century by Wenzel Anton von Kaunitz, then the ambassador of the Habsburg Empire to the French court. The French court adopted this type of desk with great enthusiasm. German, Swiss and Austrian cabinetmakers of the late 18th and early 19th century often used the “bureau Kaunitz”
