This early 20th-century Marie-Antoinette mahogany chest of drawers is a masterful reproduction of a piece originally created by renowned cabinetmakers Guillaume Benneman and Joseph Stöckel. Originally commissioned by Queen Marie-Antoinette, the chest is a faithful representation of the craftsmanship of the period. It opens with two adorned doors, featuring gilded bronze decorations of scrolls, friezes, and acanthus leaves. At the center, a detailed mascaron, based on a scene by the sculptor Clodion, serves as a focal point, echoing the original design.
The interior contains four identical compartments, while the belt conceals three drawers with interlacing bronze details. The central drawer showcases a lion’s mouth bronze handle. Both the front and rear uprights feature falling acanthus and asparagus leaves, ending in spinning top feet with collars and palmette sabots. The sides mirror this intricate design, also featuring mascarons of scenic depictions. Topping the antique piece is a thick Carrara marble surface, bordered with a frieze of oves, following the lines of the chest. In excellent condition, this ceremonial chest showcases a satin varnish finish.
