French Louis XV Marquetry Commode with Marble Top, 18th Century
This exceptional French marquetry commode dates to the Transition period between Louis XV and Louis XVI, circa 1760–1770. Its elegant bombé form retains the flowing lines of the Rococo period. The sophisticated geometric parquetry anticipates the more architectural vocabulary of Neoclassicism.
The commode offers three rows of drawers, with the upper level divided into two drawers. Elaborate geometric marquetry decorates the drawer fronts, while the sides display particularly striking trompe-l’œil cube marquetry surrounding an oval floral medallion. Contrasting woods and dark inlaid borders emphasize the intricate design.
Decorative gilt-bronze handles, escutcheons, corner mounts, and sabots complement the warm tones of the veneers. A shaped red and white veined marble top follows the contours of the case and completes the composition.
The solid wood construction and dovetailed drawers reflect traditional cabinetmaking techniques. With its sophisticated marquetry and sculptural form, this antique French commode makes an impressive statement in both traditional and contemporary interiors.
