French Mid-Century Rattan Planters
This set of three French mid-century rattan planters combines natural woven fibre with slender black lacquered iron frames. Dating from circa 1950, the planters capture the warm, informal character of French post-war interiors, where natural materials and simple geometric structures were brought together with considerable decorative charm.
Each planter features a large conical rattan basket supported by a three-legged iron tripod. The wide, tapering form creates a generous setting for plants, while the splayed legs provide a stable base without adding visual weight. Together, the woven baskets and fine iron frames create an appealing contrast between organic texture and disciplined geometry.
Woven Rattan Basket Form
The natural rattan baskets are the defining feature of the set. Their conical shape gives each planter a distinctive silhouette, while the open weave introduces texture and warmth.
The generous proportions make the planters particularly suitable for larger houseplants, palms, decorative branches, or sculptural arrangements. Their natural finish also pairs easily with wood, stone, ceramics, and other organic materials.
Black Lacquered Iron Tripods
Each basket rests within a slender tripod of black lacquered iron. The three legs splay outward from the central support, creating a balanced structure with a light and elegant appearance.
The contrast between the dark iron and warm rattan is especially effective. Moreover, the restrained geometry of the tripod gives the woven baskets a distinctly mid-century character without overwhelming their natural materiality.
French Post-War Design
French designers and craftsmen increasingly embraced natural materials during the post-war period. Rattan, wicker, bamboo, and other woven fibres brought an informal quality to domestic interiors, while metal frameworks introduced structure and modernity.
These planters reflect that broader design vocabulary. Their combination of artisanal weaving, functional construction, and understated geometry makes them equally comfortable in a period interior or a contemporary setting.
A Versatile Set of Three
Sold as a set of three, the planters can be arranged together to create a cohesive botanical display or distributed throughout a room. Used as a group, their repeated form creates a pleasing visual rhythm. Alternatively, placing them in separate areas can introduce continuity between different parts of an interior.
At 73.5 cm high, each planter has a substantial presence while retaining the visual lightness characteristic of mid-century woven furniture and accessories.
