Louis XVI Chest of Drawers,

South German, 1780, walnut veneer and walnut, plum and yew marquetry with geometric shapes on top, sides and front. Original brass fittings.

Historical Background

The Louis XVI style was developed in France during the reign of Louis XVI. Unlike his predecessor Louis XV, the new king preferred stricter forms. No more curved outlines and pompous bronze fittings but a more unpretentious design vocabulary.

The new style marked the triumph of neo-classicism, which had been underway in Europe since 1770. It reflected the murals and designs found in the early archeological excavations in Herculaneum and Pompei.

Several “ebeniste” of the Louis XVI period in Paris came from the Rhineland. One of the most famous furniture designers of this group was David Roentgen (1743-1807). Roentgen embraced the neoclassical and the Rococo style and had an influence on the cabinet makers in Continental Europe.

This piece showcases Some of the typical features of German Louis XVI furniture wonderfully: a strict design combined with linear, and often geometric veneer and marquetry motifs, made of different types of local and exotic woods.
