Oval Biedermeier Extendable Dining Table in Cherry, South Germany, circa 1880
This impressive Biedermeier extendable dining table dates to circa 1880 and comes from Southern Germany. Crafted in cherry wood and cherry veneer, the table combines elegant Neoclassical proportions with remarkable versatility. Fully extended, it reaches approximately 385 cm / 151.57 in. and can comfortably seat up to 18 people.
The oval tabletop features a refined ebonized decorative band and edge, creating a striking contrast with the warm cherry wood. Six solid cherry wood legs support the table. Their square, tapered form and ebonized tips emphasize the clean architectural lines associated with Biedermeier and Neoclassical furniture.
During restoration, five cherry-veneered extension leaves were custom-made for the table. Each leaf measures approximately 49.5 cm / 19.49 in. This allows the table to be configured in six different lengths, making it equally suitable for intimate dinners and large gatherings.
The cherry wood has a traditional hand-polished shellac finish, which enhances its warm color and natural grain. The table remains in good, previously restored condition with minor signs of age and use. Upon purchase, we can polish the table again and refresh the ebonized details with shellac.
