About the Artist
Pierre Ambrogiani, a French painter, was born in 1907 in Ajaccio and passed away in Allauch in 1985. Coming from a modest family, he grew up in Marseille’s old popular neighborhood. In 1920, he began working for Marseille-Colbert as a carrier of dispatches, later becoming a postman for the Post Office in Marseille from 1928 to 1950. In 1936, alongside his painter friends Antoine Serra, Louis Toncini, and Francois Diana, Ambrogiani, with the support of Andre Malraux and Louis Aragon, played a key role in establishing the first house of culture in the province. Notably, he had close friendships with Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giano, whom he met near his former studio in the Old Post.
Ambrogiani’s artistic style can be described as expressionist, characterized by a vibrant palette of fauve and violet colors. His body of work encompasses Provençal landscapes, still life compositions, as well as illustrations for various publications. In 1962, he adorned the Immaculated Conception of Maseille Church with frescoes and stained glass windows. As a prolific artist, Ambrogiani created over 1500 paintings, seven sculptures, 1200 drawings and watercolors, and 300 prints for public sales.
