Historical Background
The Biedermeier Style which developed around 1810-20 in central Europe, is still one of the most sought after antique furniture styles. During the Biedermeier period the middle class emerged and became, alongside the noble clients, the new commissioner for home decorations and furniture.
Sleek designs characterizes the Biedermeier style. And, compared to the pompous 18th century styles, it appears to be understated. Nevertheless, it shows an elegant use of form and a love for details.
Especially the Biedermeier chair designs show a huge variety of models. These varieties of design and form had a big impact on a lot of 20th century century Bauhaus and Art Deco designers. Also read our blog post about the history and development of the chair.
