Rognon Chest of Drawers, Louis XIV / Louis XV Transition style – Late 19th century
This charming Rognon chest of drawers, crafted in Paris during the late 19th century, embodies the transition between Louis XIV and Louis XV styles. It features three identical, slightly curved drawers with rosewood veneer, arranged in a butterfly wing pattern at the center. The drawers showcase a border with delicate double light wood inlays, framed by mitered mahogany strips. Each drawer has a central bronze keyhole adorned with a Louis XVI knot, encircled by a crown of foliage. The original lock is functional, with a later key, and the interior of the drawers is finished in oak.
The lower section features a slightly scalloped crosspiece, embellished with bronze detailing inspired by Greco-Roman designs. The sides of the chest mirror the front, with rosewood veneer and light wood thread inlays. The quarter-round mahogany uprights are adorned with bronze accents at the top and terminate in curved feet with bronze lion’s paw shoes. The chest is features a Pyrenees griotte marble, framed by an openwork brass gallery. The refined ornamentation and golden details add a sense of elegance, and the unique shape of the piece makes it especially rare.
