Swedish Gustavian Painted Chest of Drawers, 19th Century
A rare and highly decorative antique Swedish Gustavian chest of drawers (commode), dating to the mid–late 19th century. This exceptional piece features a beautifully aged painted finish with intricate hand-painted detailing across the top rail, complemented by subtle gilt accents that enhance its refined neoclassical character.
The chest is composed of four drawers fitted with brass ring pulls, offering practical storage while maintaining its elegant proportions. The façade is further defined by column-form verticals, leading down to a carved plinth base and shaped feet, typical of the Gustavian aesthetic.
What sets this piece apart is its unusual surface treatment—a softly timeworn painted finish layered with delicate hand decoration. Particularly striking in person, it brings both visual texture and historical depth to an interior.
Structurally sound and suitable for careful everyday use, the chest combines decorative presence with functionality.
