George Nelson Executive Office Group Walnut Desk for Herman Miller, USA 1949
Iconic modernist executive desk from the celebrated Executive Office Group (EOG) series designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller. Created in 1949, this large Mid-Century Modern desk exemplifies Nelson’s influential vision of refined and functional American office furniture.
The desk features an expansive rectangular top in richly figured walnut veneer, supported by two asymmetrical suspended drawer pedestals with two and three drawers respectively. A tubular chromed steel base gives the piece its architectural lightness while adjustable glides ensure stability. Profiled extruded aluminum pulls accentuate the clean modernist lines.
A particularly desirable feature of this example is the original walnut modesty panel enclosing the rear space between the pedestals, enhancing both visual presence and executive functionality. The original Herman Miller label remains preserved beneath the top near the central niche.
George Nelson’s Executive Office Group series became one of the defining office furniture collections of the American Mid-Century Modern movement. As Director of Design for Herman Miller from 1947 to 1972, Nelson transformed workplace aesthetics through innovative forms, architectural clarity, and functional sophistication. Today, EOG desks are highly sought after by collectors, architects, and design enthusiasts for their timeless elegance and historical importance.
Condition
Good overall vintage condition with an attractive walnut patina consistent with age and use. Surface wear includes light scratches to the top, pedestals, and drawer fronts, reflecting the desk’s original working function. One pedestal retains its original lock (key missing), while the second lock is absent.
An exceptional George Nelson Herman Miller desk, ideal for a sophisticated executive office, collector’s interior, or Mid-Century Modern workspace.
