18th Century French Transition Marquetry Chest of Drawers with Marble Top
This elegant 18th-century French Transition marquetry chest of drawers with marble top combines the graceful lines of the Louis XV period with the geometric refinement of the emerging Louis XVI style.
Crafted with richly figured wood veneers, the commode features a gently shaped front with three smaller upper drawers and four larger drawers below. Geometric marquetry and contrasting dark inlay frame the drawer fronts, while delicate decorative motifs add depth and visual interest.
The design beautifully reflects the French Transition period. Its curved front and shaped apron recall Louis XV furniture, while the balanced proportions, geometric decoration, and slender tapering legs anticipate the Neoclassical style of Louis XVI. Furthermore, the cabinetmaker continued the marquetry onto the sides, creating large geometric veneer panels that give the chest a sophisticated appearance from every angle. Decorative gilt-bronze escutcheons and circular drawer pulls complement the warm tones of the wood.
A beautifully figured marble top with a molded edge completes the design and adds an elegant contrast to the intricate marquetry below. With its refined proportions, warm wood tones, and distinctive geometric decoration, this French Transition commode is a beautiful example of late 18th-century French furniture. In good condition.
