Antique Baroque Marquetry Secretary Desk, 18th Century
This elegant antique Baroque secretary desk dates to the 18th century. It features richly figured walnut wood veneers and detailed marquetry on an oak carcass.
The secretary is a central European piece, with a possible German origin.
The slant front displays a large panel of beautiful figured veneer. Contrasting geometric banding frames the central panel. As a result, the different wood tones create a rich and decorative surface.
The fall front opens to reveal a practical writing surface. Inside, several compartments and small drawers provide useful storage. Larger drawers below offer additional space for documents and personal belongings.
Decorative brass handles and escutcheons contrast beautifully with the warm wood. In addition, rounded bun feet complete the classic Baroque silhouette.
The exact origin remains uncertain. However, the design and construction suggest a Continental European origin, possibly Germany or France.
