Historical Background
The Louis XVI style was developed in France during the reign of Louis XVI. Unlike his predecessor Louis XV, the new king preferred stricter forms. No more curved outlines and pompous bronze fittings but a more unpretentious design vocabulary.
The new style marked the triumph of Neoclassicism, which had been underway in Europe since 1770. It reflected the murals and designs found in the early archeological excavations in Herculaneum and Pompei.
