Antique Cylinder Desk
Louis XVI antique cylinder desk, Germany circa 1780.
This beautiful cylinder desk features an exquisite walnut veneer. Exquisite rosewood and maple intarsia additionally decorate the desk. Behind the cylinder top are five small drawers and an open compartment. The writing top has a walnut veneer.
The Louis XVI style was developed in France during the reign of Louis XVI. Unlike his predecessor Louis XV, the new king preferred stricter forms. No more curved outlines and pompous bronze fittings but a more unpretentious design vocabulary.
The new style marked the triumph of Neoclassicism, which had been underway in Europe since 1770. It reflected the murals and designs found in the early archeological excavations in Herculaneum and Pompei.
