Antique Walnut Dresser, Baroque Period 1750
This exquisite antique walnut dresser dates back to 1750 and originates in Switzerland. Ornate hand carved decorations, featuring volutes and flowers, and a pretty walnut veneer embellish the front and sides of the three drawer chest. The veneer of the top might have been replaced later, it has additional yew tree inlays with geometric motifs. Furthermore, the bronze fittings are original. This unique and very special piece is definitely an eye-catcher.
The Baroque Style in Switzerland
The Swiss Baroque style shows a lot of influence from Germany or France. A famous Swiss cabinetmaker of the 18th century was Mathaeus Funk.
Funk designed and produced unique furniture for the wealthy Swiss bourgeoisie. Funk was born 1697 in Frankfurt (Germany). After his apprenticeship to become a cabinetmaker, he started his journeyman journey within Germany and in Paris.
Since 1724 he worked and lived in Berne as a master cabinetmaker.
A lot of his antique dressers and secretaries are on display at the Schloss Jegenstorf Museum in Switzerland.
Additionally, there is the important influence of the Swiss folk art, which leaves some of the Swiss furniture with a more rustic touch.
