Baroque center table, Switzerland 17-18th century
This Baroque center table or dining table is raised on an original 17-18th century base with twisted legs joined by a stretcher. Walnut root veneer, framed by various geometric and floral intarsia, decorate the gorgeous octagonal top. The top was probably added later and dates back to circa 1850.
The style of the top’s intarsia shows an influence from Swiss furniture styles of the 17th and 19th century. The 17th-18th century base comes probably also from Switzerland.
This Baroque center table would be an exquisite and very decorative table in an entryway or would also work wonderfully as a very unique dining table. You could even add modern dining chairs around it to obtain an individual and eclectic feel in your dining room area.
Swiss Baroque Style
The Swiss Baroque style shows a lot of influence from Germany or France. A famous cabinetmaker of the 18th century was Mathaeus Funk. Funk designed and produced unique furniture for the wealthy Swiss bourgeoisie.
Additionally, there is the important influence of the Swiss folk art, which leaves some of the Swiss furniture with a more rustic touch.
You can, for example, find hand painted or hand carved wooden chests or armoires in the Alpine areas of Switzerland, and furthermore in the 17th century the so called “Schragentische”, a type of trestle tables with slate tops.
The intarsia and octagonal form of the top of the Baroque center table, which we offer here on Styylish, show definitely an influence of the “Schragentische”. Especially the intarsia are comparable to the wooden frames around the slate tops of these tables.
