Empire Style Console Cabinet, France 1820
This beautiful Empire Style Console Cabinet dates back to around 1820 and comes from France.
It was made during the so called French Restoration, a style which marks the reaction against the gaudy spectacle and monumental pomp of the Empire. It fostered an elegance, refinement and subtlety that had been obscured by Napoleonic grandeur. Elegant yet unpretentious harmony characterizes Restoration furniture. It still shows the influence of the preceding Empire style but is not as pompous. The German and Austrian Biedermeier style show a similar design language.
The console cabinet has a central drawer in the upper part. Below that is a strongly curved central door which is flanked by two columns. The cabinet stands on a slightly protruding base. The console has a gorgeous mahogany veneer on front , sides and top. It is in very good condition.
