French 1950s Wrought Iron Pricket Floor Candlesticks
This pair of French 1950s wrought iron pricket floor candlesticks combines traditional ecclesiastical forms with the graphic simplicity of post-war French ironwork. Each candlestick rises from a substantial tripod base, while the tall, slender shaft introduces a sequence of forged and twisted details that give the pair both sculptural character and visual rhythm.
Measuring approximately 114 cm high, these floor-standing candlesticks have a commanding presence. At the same time, their open tripod construction keeps the silhouettes visually light. The even black patina further emphasizes the character of the hand-worked iron.
Forged Tripod Bases
Each candlestick stands on three arched legs that terminate in broad, hammered flat feet. The tripod arrangement provides a stable foundation while giving the base a distinctly architectural profile.
Above the legs, the shaft rises with a fine, elongated proportion. Two twisted sections frame a central forged ring, creating a subtle contrast between the spiralling iron and the more restrained shaft. The visible variations of the forged surface reinforce the artisanal quality of the pair.
Pricket Candle Cups
The upper section opens into a broad circular cup fitted with a central pricket. Designed to hold a taper or substantial candle, this traditional arrangement gives the candlesticks their characteristic ecclesiastical silhouette.
The combination of the wide cup, pointed pricket, and tall shaft creates a strong vertical accent. Consequently, the pair can frame architectural features such as a fireplace, doorway, or substantial console.
French Post-War Ironwork
These candlesticks reflect the French post-war revival of traditional wrought-iron forms. During the 1950s, historic church and château lighting provided inspiration for domestic objects that combined rustic materials with more disciplined, graphic silhouettes.
Here, the blackened wrought iron retains an intentionally honest character. Slight surface oxidation and variations in the patina remain visible, adding depth to the finish without diminishing the decorative effect.
