French Smoked Glass and Bronze Fireplace Screen
This French smoked glass fireplace screen combines refined 1970s design with sculptural bronze detailing. A large smoked glass panel sits between two freestanding bronze supports. Together, these elements create an elegant fireside piece with a strong decorative presence.
The smoked glass panel has a warm grey-brown tint. Its semi-translucent surface softly absorbs and reflects light, adding depth without visually overwhelming the fireplace. The broad, flat panel also gives the design a clean and contemporary appearance.
The bronze supports provide the screen’s most distinctive decorative feature. Each support is designed as a small sculptural composition. Flowing C-scrolls and lyre-shaped foliate motifs rise along the upright shafts, creating an elegant sense of movement.
The sculptural metalwork recalls the refined vocabulary of Raymond Subes, one of France’s most important Art Deco metalworkers. The supports should be understood as stylistically related to Subes rather than directly attributed to him unless supporting documentation is available.
The contrast between smoked glass and bronze gives this fireplace screen its sophisticated character. The smooth glass creates a calm backdrop, while the detailed bronze introduces warmth, texture, and visual interest. As a result, the piece works equally well as functional fireplace furniture and as a decorative accent.
Measuring 70 cm wide and 47.5 cm high, this French fireplace screen is well suited to medium and larger hearths. Its restrained profile also makes it easy to incorporate into a variety of interiors, from Art Deco and modernist spaces to contemporary and traditional French rooms.
