This French Neoclassical fireplace screen combines elegant classical proportions with the practical function of traditional fireside furniture. Made in France circa 1970, this three-panel folding screen reflects the enduring influence of Directoire and Empire design on 20th-century French interiors.
The three-panel fireplace screen features a graceful semicircular arch at the top of its central panel, while the two rectangular side panels fold forward on hinges to enclose the hearth. A polished brass frame surrounds each panel, and a refined beaded border adds decorative definition inspired by the vocabulary of French Neoclassical design.
Each panel contains a fine black steel wire mesh, echoing the traditional French parefeu. The mesh helps contain sparks and embers while still allowing the warmth and visual movement of the fire to remain visible. When illuminated by the hearth, the overlapping panels create subtle shifting patterns across the wire surface.
