German Empire Walnut Chest of Drawers, circa 1810–1820

This elegant German Empire chest of drawers, dating to the early 19th century, combines strong architectural proportions with beautifully figured walnut veneer and finely detailed gilt-brass hardware.
The rectangular top features carefully book-matched walnut veneer, creating a striking symmetrical grain pattern. Below, three spacious drawers display richly figured walnut veneers selected for their depth and movement. A pair of imposing rounded columns frames the façade, a characteristic element of Empire furniture, and continues into substantial rounded feet.

Particularly attractive are the original-style gilt-brass ring pulls, decorated with roses, foliage, and floral garlands. Their refined Neoclassical ornament provides an elegant contrast to the warm walnut. Three central keyholes emphasize the balanced symmetry of the façade.

The restrained architectural design reflects the influence of classical antiquity that defined the Empire period. The exceptional walnut gives the chest warmth and decorative presence.
